Atomic City – Government Lair – 2003

genre:

length:

format:

comedy

1 hr television pilot

DV

notes: The Jetsons meets James Bond Bachelor Pad in this over-the-top comedy pitched for cable networks.  Creator Markus Rothkranz, a former visual effects artist himself, farmed out 150 vfx shots to volunteers around the Internet.

I accepted the work on the "secret government lair" from which our protagonist is spied upon.

vfx:

I provided digital back lot and blue screen compositing for several blue-screen plates acquired on DV-CAM.  The only live set piece was the chair.

The shoot lacked a visual effects coordinator so there were some problems with the footage.  Lighting of talent and bluescreen was inconsistent and there was a green cast from overhead fluorescents left burning during some shots.  Dark halos from chromatic aberration ringed actors in some shots and non-blue screen backgrounds, like floors, were in the frame behind moving elements requiring hand rotoscoping.

With more time, I would have painted mattes to motivate the spark flashes on the talent.
