I came on board as D.P. for this one-day shoot about a
week before production. With no budget for large lights, I
encouraged director, Steve Warren, to stage the scene in the shadow of a large Live
Oak tree under which I could bounce sun light to create keys. The
bounce from the surrounding area created a sufficient fill and the
dappling of sun through the trees added texture to the scene.
The two women sitting on the bench were lit entirely with
bounce light. To assure the sun would be available when needed, I
used 3DStudio Max to plot a sun path chart.

The father/daughter required a 1000watt tungsten key
since the sun wasn't in position for a bounce during the early-morning
shot.

As a first-time
director, Steve requested some additional pre-pro for camera angles and
coverage. I worked with him to pre-visualize the scene and
provided a detailed set diagram for his review and approval.

The shot diagram also served as our shot

"Michael
understood my need to shoot lean and he made that happen. His
pre-production preparation was thorough and timely. He informed me early on
as to the equipment he would need and he met with me to discuss each shot.
The shoot went smoothly and the actors commented on how well organized we
were. Much of that was due to the thoroughness of our pre-production
discussions and to Michael's professionalism."
