I lit and operated "A" camera for three commercial spots
shot over three days in six locations. While I have managed to
avoid using the overrated Panasonic AG-DVX100 with its deep depth-of-field
and limited, 6-stop contrast latitude, I found myself lighting for, not
one, but three
DVX100's running simultaneously for this project. Fortunately,
most of our locations didn't test the limits of contrast and we were
able to shoot with a modicum of lighting.
The top frame of the "trio with clocks" was lit with two
ellipsoidals painting squares of light on the white ceiling to simulate
nasty, recessed fluorescent fixtures. The illusion was
further enhanced by white-balancing the cameras through a
half-minus-green gel to cast the camera towards green. A foil
bounce filled in shadowed faces for a couple of shots.

"Michael
Morlan proved invaluable as a cinematographer on three commercials, as well
as assisting with the writing process, post production, and visual FX.
Having his own equipment company (Austin Film Tools) proved an added value.
The shoot was a challenging one, involving multi-camera shoots on a very
aggressive shooting schedule, and Michael provided the highest degree of
professionalism and dedication throughout. The end result was a very
happy client." Jeffrey Travis -
