Lots of
unmotivated edge lighting evokes the era of spaghetti westerns.
Wildly varying cloudy conditions and a tight schedule required us to
shoot right through radical changes in daylight. Without the
benefit of really big lights (like 18Kw HMI's) to recreate the sun
during overcast conditions, we resorted to edging on close-ups only
using shiny boards and FAY banks. The pro-sumer
1/3" format was quite suited to the deep focus of a Western.
Between that and the subdued production design palette, I was left with
the use of levels and composition to direct the viewer's eye. But,
then, that's what makes the Western genre so great.
