Stairway to Heaven – 2005

scene 16

 vfx:

Here, the dead William (Jonathan Boatwright) watches his living self struggle with a broken ornament.  The effect was created with two shots.

The plates were shot without benefit of green screen so all composite edges were hand-animated rotoscope splines.

TRIO:

For this shot, the distant man in the doorway was actually layered over the foreground couple/room shot and masks animated to reveal the couple beneath the doorway man.

A partly-cloudy day complicates the compositing since the scene varies in brightness and balance between takes.  Some careful color correction compensates.

DUO:

First, a plate of the dead William at left was shot with a stand-in to serve as an eyeline focus.  The stand-in also provided shadows across the actor during the take - especially as he moves away from Jonathan at the end.

For the second plate, the beats of Jonathan's first performance were timed with a stopwatch and his performance at the right of this frame directed by me.
