INSPIRING ME TO WORK FOR LESS
I often consider pro-bono or reduced-fee
work on narrative projects. Some of the things I consider when reviewing a
potential project include;
- Is
the script compelling, visually engaging, competently written? Is the
story something I personally resonate with? Can my unique artistic
contribution serve the story and the director's vision?
-
Does the director have any experience/awards/recognition? (It's okay if
they don't. I've shot for quite a few first-time directors.) Does the
director have any related experience like acting or film studies? Can I
see their work? Is the director an actor’s director seeking an
cinematographer to provide visual inspiration? Is she a visual director
seeking a visual collaborator? Will we be simpatico?
-
Does the editor have any experience/recognition/rewards? How will
his/her contribution enhance the work?
-
What is the project's budget? Is money being spent on production
design/sets/costumes/ interesting locations?
- Is
there a solid post-production plan including grading and color timing of
the footage?
-
What experience do other key crew/cast members have? Are there name
actors attached?
-
What medium will the project be shot on? Film is more attractive than
video but I've shot images I am very proud of with pro-sumer cameras.
Am I relied upon to choose an acquisition format and tools?
-
Does the production have a solid business and marketing plan? Is it
realistic? Do the plans effectively target an audience segment and
include fallback positions? Can I read them?
- Am
I being paid a living wage? If not, what prestige and exposure may I
gain from the project?
- Most importantly, do
the production team and I get a good feeling about each other? Do we
understand and appreciate each other's vision of the project. Will we
be good collaborators?
While I
will often do reduced-fee work, I can't donate the rental of my gear. I
have to cover the cost of loans, repairs, and maintenance. I do, however,
offer very attractive rates and can beat any rate offered by other rental
shops. |
